Kobe Beef and Kobe One Day Trip

After Kobe trip with wonderful kobe beef dinner on 3 years back, I have another chance to visit Kobe again to enjoy world's famous beef steak. From forum and internet, travellers' feedback on kobe beef lunch cannot beat dinner set. With previous experience which Camus and myself will never forget in our life, I decided to give lunch a try and then make a comparison between set lunch and set dinner. I did some survey before go for kobe beef lunch, Wakkoqu restaurant has many good review. So my plan is to visit this restaurant. We arrived at Sannomiya station on that day before 12pm and would like to have short walk around that area before go for lunch. When we just arrived at Sannomiya Hankyu Station, we saw a long queue outside another kobe beef restaurant. We walked closer to look at the menu, the price is more cheaper compare with Wakkoqu. I believed it has some good reasons why people queue for the meal. We followed the queue and had our kobe beef steak lunch. The restaurant I mentioned here is Steak Land. We were arranged to dine at second floor, they served in tepanyaki style and guests were sitted around the table while the chef will cook and serve at center area. After put order, they served us salad, miso soup, steak sauce and plain water. When they brought two big pieces of beef (for 4 serving) to the table, I was regretted with my decision made. By looking at the kobe beef, it looks not fresh with brown in colour. Oh no, my main target for this trip gone. I had to stop blaming myself at that moment and pray hard that the beef will turn out good in taste. Compare with previous kobe beef dinner, I had to agreed that lunch is really not as good as dinner. After looking at how the chef cook the steak (obviously not as "proffesional" as our kobe beef dinner's chef), I started to enjoy my meal. I changed my mind after my first bite on the medium cook kobe beef, it was still soooooo soft and melt in mouth. With 2980yen for this set lunch, I can say I was satisfied with it at this price. Of course, if you aim for better quality and environment, I would recommend Mouriya Restaurant which we went for dinner. After the lunch, we proceeded with our trip at Kobe area. We walked from Sannomiya to China Town, then to Harbourland. Then end our one day trip at Kobe. I wish to return again for next Kobe beef romantic dinner with my dear Camus.

Japanese Rice Ball Onigiri おにぎり

Onigiri お握り or 御握り, is a Japanese rice ball made with white rice and shaped into traingular or oval shapes, it can be wrapped in seaweed (nori 海苔). An onigiri is normally filled with pickled ume (umeboshi 梅干), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. You can easily get it from convenient stores in Japan. I made an onigiri in Japan, with a very simple ingredients and procedures to follow. Those ingredients can easily get in Malaysia too.

Cha Dango 京の茶だんご | Japan

Dango is a Japanese dumpling made from mochiko, rice flour. There are many varieties of dango in Japan and normally three to four dango are often served on a skewer. The texture of the dango is very similar to chinese glutinous flour ball (tang yuan), especially the plain dango, not only the texture, the taste is almost close to tang yuan. On this post, I would like to share on the Cha Dango from Kyoto, Japan 京の茶だんご. It is a green tea flavour dango where only sells in Kyoto area. I have never see this brand of dango in Tokyo.

Kawan Brand Chapati with Egg, Cheese and Fish Fillet

Beside puff pastry, Kawan brand also came out Chapati. It contains 10 pieces of chapati in a pack. I bought one pack of it last few weeks and make my own breakfast. It is very easy and flexi recipe, just to share my way of making this chapati. Hope you will enjoy it.

GZB_5My mother usually will buy home made mooncake (gong zai bing) from her friend every year. This year her friend does not make the mooncake to sell, so we make it ourself. It is not difficult to make this gong zai bing, we get ingredients and recipe from one of the ingredient shop in Penang. The sales person recommended us to use pure peanut oil as our cooking oil is not a pure peanut oil, they added a kind of essence to make cooking oil. I do not know how true it is, but from the price, they have so much difference in "real" peanut oil (RM11 for 500g) compare to our cooking oil. We also bought cake flour from her to make the mooncake but according to her, any medium protein flour will do. Recall back last year, I used low protein flour to make gong zai bing. Golden syrup is expensive too, RM11.50 for 1kg.

Ingredients:
500ml golden syrup
200ml peanut oil
15ml lye water
700g medium protein flour/cake flour

Method:
1. Mix golden syrup, peanut oil and lye water in big bowl until combine.
2. Sift in flour and mix until combine. Do not overmix to prevent mixture become hard.
3. Cover bowl and leave for 6 hours or overnight. (compare with my last year recipe, which need to leave for 2 hours only, the sales person said 6 hours will let the flour absorb oil/golden syrup fully and give the mooncake better taste)
4. Preheat oven at 180C for half an hour.
5. Divide dough to 40g each and roll it round, lightly press with palm to flatten it.
6. Bake in oven (fan-forced) for 12 mins or until cooked.

The gong zai bing smell and taste really good after baked. It is best to keep and consume after 3 days, as when the biscuit just out from oven, the texture is not soft yet. I will keep this recipe for future use. The same recipe can be used to make traditional mooncake (wrap with filling) too.

Before I end this post, MnYfoodtalk would like to wish everyone a very Happy Mooncake Festival!

Hi Gen,
Yes, you can use other types of oil, such as corn oil.

Quoting Gen:
Hi,

Are there any possible substitutes for peanut oil? I want to make this for a friend but she is allergic to peanuts :(
